A New Personal Best
I shaved 15 more seconds off of my 5K time this brisk morning as I ran in the Modesto Classic at Tuolumne Park. I've been running 3 days/week for the past 3 months, mostly on the treadmil doing a lot of speedwork. I ventured outside only the past few weeks trying to maintain that same speed while adding in some hills (or inclines is more like it). I think I meant to take it easy after the last race but that didn't seem to happen. Maybe this time I'll actually take at least a week off. However, I am entertaining the idea of a marathon in Vegas in 2007.

I ran in that race!
Now That's Motivation: Terry Stanley sent the Runner's World office an email earlier this week stating he had just won the Presque Isle Marathon (Erie, PA)-- a race he also won 28 years ago in 1977. He wondered if this 28-year-span between wins might be some sort of record. After consulting with Ken Young of the Association of Road Racing Statisticians it was determined that Terry does indeed top the world list for this little known statistic. Previously the Big Kahuna was England's Hugh Jones who had a 25 year 332 day span between his wins.

Ripon Almond Blossom Festival 8K
The “L in almond is silent for those of you not from around here. Add Ripon to the list of cities I’ve raced in – maybe town is a better word. The route was mainly through neighborhoods and country roads surrounded by fields of blossoming almond trees. I hadn’t been feeling 100% the past few weeks and was happy to round the last corner and see the finish line. 43:03 was the time – about where I had planned to be. Trish came in after me (deciding at the last minute to run) and Kendra finishing her first race ever! The Viss boys crossing awhile ahead of us – they like to show off :). Now it’s time to enjoy a little break before I start thinking about the next one.

Personal Best
As I rounded the corner I could see the finish line. The time clock read 25:00. All I could think about was beating 26 minutes. As I started picking up the pace, something (a man, I believe) flew by me. I had to laugh at the thought of how slow that must have made me look…and remembering David sprinting 20 feet ahead of me in Hawaii when I was at full speed. (You gotta remember, I have short legs.) I turned it up another notch and focused on the finish line. The last race I ran was in July and I finished in 26:10. As I sprinted under the time clock this morning it read 26:00! 26, 26, 26! I didn’t win the race, but 26 minutes is a win in my book.

Boo Hoo.
Turns out the Nike Women's 1/2 Marathon is sold out! Should have known not to wait til the last minute (today was the last day for early bird registration). Maybe I can find something else to train for. There's always some fierce competition at the Riverbank Wine and Cheese Festival 5K...

I know I’m training when…
I look forward to easy days. Today was one of them. Yoga, a brisk walk and weight training. That’s what I call easy. Anything not involving running is easy when you’re training for a race. My muscles are happy after a lengthening yoga session. A brisk walk is movement, but nothing strenuous. Weight training adds balance by working my non-running muscles. My glycogen is replenished and I’ll be ready to hit the pavement tomorrow morning.

Late Start.
It was dark this morning when I woke up. Clock said 5:30am. Time to get up. Opened my eyes again and the sun was out…clock said 6:05am. Now I’m rushing around the house. Not running really isn’t an option as I think about the upcoming mornings and my mile goal for the week. Luckily it’s early in training and I’m just working on building up a sound base…5 miles is easy to fit in. A month from now it would be “long-run day and I wouldn’t be as forgiving on myself. One month prior to this and I probably would have just had a relaxing yoga morning and carried on with my day. Ah, the joys of training. Anyway, I have a new route and that’s what’s pushing me out the door. New routes are like a treasure to runners – different scenery, new ground, hills, flats and maybe even some new runners. If you’re lucky enough to live in the Bay area…you’ll never run out of running routes. The San Francisco Running Guide by Bob Cooper is a great book to help you explore the area and tally up miles.

On your mark. Get set. Go!
And I’m off….mile 1- I feel good, na, na, na, na, na, na ,na…mile 3 – around the Embarcadero…mile 5 – this is too easy….over the 8 mile hump…mile 10 – out of Golden Gate Park…mile 12 – little windy, but only one mile to go…mile 13 – and the finish line! Join me as I weblog training for the Nike Women’s ½ Marathon in San Francisco – the best city for running! Five years ago, I journaled my training for the City of Pittsburgh Marathon - that was one cold Pennsylvania winter! This time it's going online and yes, I'll probably be complaining about the California heat!
